Avatars of the tortoise: life, longevity and simulation
نویسنده
چکیده
No one knows for certain, but it is thought these giant tortoises live over 200 years in the wild. By way of illustration, a fully grown giant tortoise from Madagascar (G. radiata) was presented to the Queen of Tonga by Captain Cook in the 1770s. This tortoise died in 1966. It is entirely possible, on your visit to the Galápagos, that you may meet one of the same tortoises who greeted Charles Darwin a mere 161 years earlier – perhaps the slow, patient one he rode like a pony, whooping with joy. http://www.terraquest.com/galapagos

Longevity and growth strategies of tiie desert tortoise {Gopherus agassizii) in two American deserts
The desert tortoise occurs in two strikingly different desert regimes in the southwestern United States. In the Mojave Desert, rainfall is more irregular and resources are more limited than in the Sonoran Desert. We examined the age structure of tortoise populations from these two deserts to determine whether the difference in resource availability has driven an evolutionary divergence in life ...
متن کاملEvaluation of the effect of plant growth substances on longevity of gerbera cut flowers cv. Sorbet.
Gerbera is one of the most popular cut flowers in the world. Several experiments have been done on the effect of different chemical compounds on longevity and quality of cut flowers. In the present study, two experiments based on a completely random design with two treatments and three replications were conducted on gerbera cut flower cv. Sorbet. The first experiment examined the effect of BA, ...
متن کاملEvaluation of Cut Carnation Longevity cv. ‘Yellow Candy’ under Treatment with Chemical and Organic Antimicrobial Compounds
Carnation (Dianthus caryophyllus L.) is valuable in terms of production and exports in the world. Increased vase life of cut flowers is an important factor for their market acceptability. For this purpose this study was carried out to examine the effect of plant essential oils as compared to 8-hydroxy-quinoline sulfate on the control of bacteria population and the longevity of carnation cut flo...
متن کاملThe Agassiz’s desert tortoise genome provides a resource for the conservation of a threatened species
Agassiz's desert tortoise (Gopherus agassizii) is a long-lived species native to the Mojave Desert and is listed as threatened under the US Endangered Species Act. To aid conservation efforts for preserving the genetic diversity of this species, we generated a whole genome reference sequence with an annotation based on deep transcriptome sequences of adult skeletal muscle, lung, brain, and bloo...
متن کاملScreening Eight Cultivars of Alstroemeria Cut Flower for Vase Life and Biochemical Traits
Alstroemeria is one of the most popular cut flowers in European Union owing to its postharvest longevity and broad color spectra. Nevertheless, premature wilting decreases the aesthetic value of flowering branches even before the opening of the secondary florets in the fluorescence. The present study evaluated different biochemical and morphological traits of Alstroemeria cut ...
